Dear Jane

Dear Jane,

One of the “features” of churches is they tend to present one version of many interpretations as if it was the one and only truth, and Revelations is a good example. The “Left Behind” series served to scare the shit out of everyone and help convince us that Jesus is about to return any day now. What the churches do not tell us is that Futurism is only one of three ways of dealing with Revelation, and that there is also the Literary theory and the Praeterist Theory.

Praeterism (for example) says that Revelation was all (or almost all) fulfulled within the generation that lived with Jesus. The disciples asked “when will these things happen” and Jesus answered “some of you will not taste death … this generation will not pass away before ..” What did he mean? I could argue very effectively that the return of Jesus happenned in AD70 when “Jeruslaem was surrounded by armies.” Of course the modern church does not teach this because they do not want to upset the masses or be shown that they could have been so grossly wrong (and risk losing a big chunk of their tithe-giving clientele).

Chuck Missler is just one more fear-monger dressed up in sheeps pseudo-intellectual clothes but is really doing nothing more than building his own Christian book-selling speaking-engagement business. His biggest crime – and he really does know better – is only presenting a “modern church friendly” version of “the truth” and conveniently missing out a big lot of other stuff that is nowhere near as cut and dried black and white as he makes it appear (just like YWAM!)

It upsets me to see beautiful people like you sucked into the shallow modern day christian theology when there is so much more richness of thought out there.

Jon

    Well Spoken Sir, Well Spoken

Jon, that was Awesome, I agree. I remember the days when I used to teach from the left behind series as if it where an God Breathed commentary on the Book of Revelations.

What I have come to realize that Revelations was a letter/Book much about the times in which it was written in. The Committee that pick the books of the bible thought this would make for a great ending the bible. Some thought it a beautiful view of and future world with great a great message of hope. Others thought it to be a warning message of the times. I look at it as more of a great Bronze Age Novel.

    Peace and Love

    Hey Evig,

Thanks so much for stopping by! I didn’t realise you were still alive and kicking out here in blog land! Great to hear from you! I have really go over my whole deconversion thing now and as such don’t really use this blog any more. Just the odd post here and there when someone pushes one of my buttons!

“Great Bronze Age Novel” LOL. And “Left Behind” some great “Christian Science Fiction” (right up there with The Da Vinci Code)

    Peace!

The bigger problem with the “Left Behind” series, IMHO, is that it helped to encourage self-righteousness in “pious” Christians. I still see many Christians near giddy with glee, imagining the suffering of all those left behind, almost excited that the non-believers are “finally getting what they deserve”.

Perhaps it is just me, but I have to believe God cares for everyone and does not want anyone to suffer. Nor, I think, would God say that anyone deserves to be left behind.

As for me, if the great rapture comes, I refuse to go unless the entire world comes with me. I absolutely refuse to leave ANYONE behind. As long as there are those suffering here on earth, I will stay with them.

    Hi Em,

Goodness what a gentle soul you are! You remind me of one of the very early church fathers “Tertullian” who felt sorry for the devil and used to pray fro his eventual salvation (Poor Terullian came in for a rather hard time from the other leaders over this one!)
I don’t recall whether it was on you site or not that I read “The proof that you have created your God in your own image is if He hates the same people you do”
These days, I am of the view that there is no rapture, no second coming, etc. We have now moved on to a new era in human evolution.
Thanks so much for calling by,
    Jon

Interesting! I have never heard of Tertullian before! I like that guy! I have to check him out!

Maybe my thoughts are influenced by Quaker teachings. There is a famous story about the Quakers sending representatives to go talk to Hitler during the war. They spent two days with him, trying to get him to stop the mass executions.

Fundamentalist christianity… sometimes it’s better just to give up on them. Or so I feel. Maybe you have more patience than I!
